Overview

Escape the busy and noisy city of Kathmandu for a few days. Nagarkot is a great getaway. On a clear day, you have great views of the Himalayas. The next day you take a short hike to the charming village of Dhulikhel, a small Newari village with brick houses. From Dhulikhel you can take a 3 hour hike (or drive) to Namo Buddha, a famous monastery where Buddha gave his life to save a starving tigress and her cubs.

Day 01 – Drive to Nagarkot and overnight

After breakfast you drive out of the busy and noisy Kathmandu, to Nagarkot, a hill village on the east of Kathmandu. If the weather is clear you have a great panoramic view of the Himalaya. You can walk around town and take a nature walk. You overnight in Nagarkot.

Day 02 – Sunrise view and walk to Dhulikhel

Get up early to walk up to the view point in Nagarkot. If the weather is clear, you will have amazing mountain views. Then come down for breakfast and hike -mostly downhill- to Dhulikhel (5-6 hours), where you stay overnight.

Day 03 – Walk to Namo Buddha and drive back to Kathmandu

After breakfast, start hiking from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha. This is a relatively easy walk and will take about 3 hours. Namo Buddha houses the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery. This is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. It is known as the place where Buddha, in a previous life as a prince, gave his body to a starving tigress and her cubs. After your visit to the monastery you drive back to Kathmandu.
