Overview

 In two weeks you will visit the main highlights of Nepal and get a glimpse of the culture, history, religion and beautiful nature of Nepal. Explore the cultural city of Kathmandu with Buddhist and Hindu temples and holy shrines. Relax by the lake in Pokhara or go paragliding from the viewpoint above the city. Trek to Poon Hill, from where you have an amazing Sunrise view of the Annapurna mountain range and look for rhinos in Chitwan National Park.

Day 01 – Arrive in Kathmandu

You will be picked up from the airport and brought to your hotel in Thamel. You can have a rest and wander around the tourist area with many souvenir shops.

Day 02 – Visit Bouddhanath and Pashupatinath

After breakfast you will go to Boudhanath Stupa, an important centre for Tibetan Buddhism. The stupa is one of the largest stupas in the world. It presents Buddha eyes on all four sides. The nose represents the number 1, symbolizing unity and the way to reach enlightenment. Above this is the third eye, symbolizing the wisdom of the Buddha.

Close to Bouddhanath is Pashupatinath, one of the holiest shrines for all Hindus, located on the banks of the Bagmati river. Thousands of followers come to pay homage to Pashupathinath every day. Elderly Hindus come here to find shelter for the last weeks of their lives, to meet death and be cremated on the banks of the river. You will see numerous platforms where cremations take place on a daily basis. Overnight in Thamel.

Day 03 - Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambunath

In the morning you will go by walk from Thamel to Kathmandu Durbar Square. On the way there you will see some nice temples, the local market and you can experience the Nepali life style. Durbar Square is very much the sacred heart of the city. Here you can visit the living goddess Kumari, who acknowledges greetings of devotees from the balcony of her temple residence. Durbar Square is filled with ancient temples and a museum showing some history of Nepal. Many of these temples were damaged during the earthquake, but it is still worth seeing.

Next, you will get a transfer to Swayambunath (Monkey temple). This white dome  is the most ancient Buddhist shrine in the valley. The temple is located on a hill, with 365 steps leading you up to the temple. The pilgrimage is covered in colorful prayer flags. From the top of the hill you have a great view over Kathmandu valley.

Day 04 - Kathmandu to Pokhara

You will take a domestic flight to Pokhara. The flight will take about half an hour. You will be brought to your hotel. The rest of the day is off. 

Day 05 - Sightseeing in Pokhara

Early in the morning a car will take you up to Sarangkot from where you will have the most beautiful views of the Annapurna range, including Machhapuchhre, at sunrise. Optionally you can go down by paragliding. The rest of the day you are free. You can visit the World Peace Pagoda, take a boat on the lake, rent a cycle or just wander around town.

Day 06 - Start your Poonhill trek. Drive to Nayapul and trek to Ulleri – 4-5 hours

After breakfast, you will take a one hour drive to Nayapul. From here you will start trekking. You will walk along the Modi stream to reach Birethanti, a village with loads of tea shops and guest houses. Then you continue along the Burungdi stream, hike up to the valley of Hile and Tikhedhunga, which leads you to Ulleri village. Ulleri is a beautiful Magar village. Here you will stay for the night.

Day 07 - Trek to Ghorepani – 5-6 hours

Today’s trek is a steeper uphill walk, with stone staircases. During the walk, the first views of Annapurna South appears. You then pass through Rhododendron forest. After crossing a stream, you will arrive at Banthanti. Following a stream up a narrow valley with more stairs you eventually end up in Ghorepani, where you will stay for the night. From here you can enjoy the spectacular views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range.

Day 08 - Hike to Poon Hill and trek to Gandruk – 6-7 hours

You get up early in the morning, for a one hour climb to Poon Hill. From here you can see tremendous views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range at sunrise. After viewing all the mountains, you trek down to Ghorepani for breakfast and proceed to Tadapani. From Ghorepani you will follow the path through forests. You keep climbing along the ridge through pine and rhododendron forests, with more spectacular views on the way. The trail then descends to a stream, going to Tadapani. From Tadapani the trail descends through forests to Gandruk, which is a village of Gurung people. They are known for their distinctive culture, customs and life style. From here you have amazing views of Annapurna range and Macchapuchhre.

Day 09 - Trek to Nayapul and drive back to Pokhara – 5-6 hours

Today starts with a steep descent down a stone stairway. When you reach flat ground, you will cross a stream followed by an easy walk to Chane village. Another short descent leads you to Birethanti and Nayapul. From here you will take a drive back to Pokhara.

Day 10 – Rest day in Pokhara

Wash some clothes, take a well deserved rest or do some sightseeing today.

Day 11 - Pokhara to Chitwan National Park

Today you will take an early bus to Chitwan National Park.  You will arrive at the hotel between 13:30-14:00. This is a good time to have some lunch. In the afternoon there will be a village tour around the Tharu village, where you can learn more about their life and culture. You can also visit the National Park Visitor centre for more information about the history of the park and the wildlife. After dinner you will go for a Tharu cultural dance program.

Day 12 – Jungle walk and jeep safari

You will get up early in the morning for breakfast. After breakfast you will take a canoe ride along the Rapti river. This is an excellent opportunity to do some bird watching and see the two species of crocodiles: the Marsh Mugger and the fish eating Gharial. From here you will start your jungle walk to look for deer, rhinos, sloth bears and other wildlife. After lunch you go for a jeep safari into the jungle, through grasslands and forests. The jeep safari will also take you to a crocodile breeding centre. The day ends with a nice dinner.

Day 13 – Drive to Kathmandu

After breakfast you will be transferred back to Kathmandu. You will arrive in the afternoon and will be transferred to your hotel. Take a rest or go shopping in Thamel for some souvenirs. Enjoy your last evening in Nepal.

Day 14 - Flight back home

You will be dropped off at the ariport from where you will fly back home. Your trip ends here.

Day 01 – Arrive in Kathmandu

You will be picked up from the airport and brought to your hotel in Thamel. You can have a rest and wander around the tourist area with many souvenir shops.

Day 02 – Visit Bouddhanath and Pashupatinath
