Kali Gandaki river is named after the goddess Kali and this holy river cuts through one of the deepest gorges in the world between Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna mountains. Nowhere else will you find such diversity on a 3 days rafting trip. The grade 3+ and 4 rapids are fun and demanding, but they are only a small part of the rafting experience. Wildlife, wonderful sandy beaches, sacred temples devoted to Kali, picturesque villages and outrageous waterfalls all combine to make the Kali Gandaki a fantastic river journey.
The Kali Gandaki is one of the holiest rivers in Nepal, which means that all along the river you will see sacred cremation beaches where the Nepalese cremate the dead bodies and perform rituals and prayers.
Early in the morning, you get on our bus, that takes us out of Pokhara through the foothills of the Annapurna Mountain all the way to Baglung, from where the river journey begins. The bus ride takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Once at the Kali Gandaki river, the guides inflate the rafts, tie all equipment on the boats and prepare lunch. After lunch, you get a lifejacket and helmet and the guides will give an extensive safety briefing about sitting position, paddling techniques and what to do if you fall out from the raft. Then you leave the road behind for the next three days.
The first part of the trip, the guides will spend explaining more about how to paddle and about what they look for when they run the river, to avoid flipping over. For the first kilometer, the rapids will be relatively small, so you can practice the paddling demands and learn how to work as a team. By the time we reach the harder rapids like Wake & Bake and Cobra, you will be working together perfectly. Just after running Little Brother and Big Brother, the Modi Khola enters the Kali Gandaki river. Here you will set up the camp on the beach.
Enjoy a nice breakfast and get ready to get back on the raft. As we descend into one of the deepest river gorges in the world, the Kali Gandaki offers the most amazing sceneries and on a clear day you will be able to see peaks like Annapurna South and Macchapuchhre. You overnight in Purti Ghat.
On the last day you will experience the last few exciting rapids before gently going downstream to the take-out point. The last part you will have plenty opportunity to swim. We finish our trip close to Mirmi. Here we take out, load everything on the bus and drive back to Pokhara.
